Culture Coffee Shop 10: What's the Next Step - Culture Coffee Shop 3

Q You guys are doing a great job of actively listening and understanding cultural dynamics from those around you. So now what? One of the concerns that I have as I work in the field of psychology is that communities, society, the world is so complex. You have to navigate among strict societal rules and policies (governmental, law, education, health care) as well as among various ways of perceiving reality based on history of experiences (worldview, parenting, gender roles, family, customs) when working with families, adults, and children in the counseling field. Many times the systems clash with the various worldviews of individuals in America and cause various disparities...such as in healthcare, education, business, and the judicial system. So when we think about how to help families address the problems as an individual counselor, it can be quite an intimidating task. A good counselor utilizes his or her skills but also knows many community partners that also can help families and individuals have additional options to promote optimal success with their goals. You've discussed these things in your groups. So this week we are shifting gears...Let's get creative and openly discuss what solutions you have seen or that you can suggest that would help society meet the needs to all individuals. Whether it is possible or not is not what we are discussing....So think big, small, or however you like. Specifically, select one or two issues that you or a group member spoke about related to your/their dialogues, personal experiences, or reaction to the course materials. Write your idea about how to address these problems. Respond to a groupmate's writing to further expand their idea or constructively give feedback of further considerations. You guys are our next generation of workers and world changers. Yep... I said it...world changers. Your influence is far reaching. So take the time to dig deep and dream of what a better world, America, community would look like.
